Episode 63 – Starcrash

Posted by on Feb 14, 2018 in Gizmonic Institutes Radio | 0 comments

Sometimes when you’re stranded in space with nothing to eat but bologna, lots of things that wouldn’t normally sound good start to sound downright tasty. Even Golden Corral, as we explore in this episode.

We also watch and discuss Starcrash – a film that seems like someone watched Star Wars while reading Dune, described both of them to a 5 year old, and then had said 5 year old write a film script. It’s like what would happen if you searched “60’s generic space film” on youtube and just let related videos auto-play for 90 minutes. As a film for MST3K though, it’s wonderfully campy and provides quite a bit of riffing fodder, as well as material for skits.

Once you’ve finished listening, head over to our facebook page, follow us on twitter, and leave us a review on iTunes (or the podcatcher of your choice). If you love our show and want to support us, for just a dollar a month you can donate to our Patreon, and get access to our other show “Doctor Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster” – a show where Dr. Odd forces us to watch one of the films from his “personal collection” and then we discuss it. It’s a lot of fun!

Thanks for listening!

Episode 62 – The Killer Shrews

Posted by on Jan 28, 2018 in Gizmonic Institutes Radio | 0 comments

Most of the time, our feelings about episodes of MST3K correspond nearly identically with those of our great GIR community. Unfortunately, our discussion of S4E7 – The Killer Shrews is not one of those times… While this seems to be a lot of people’s favorite episode, it actually turned out to be one of our our least favorites (for reasons that we go in depth on in the podcast). This is one of the many great reasons we love MST3K though – it is a show with such variety that it allows everyone to find different elements they love in different episodes. It’s also something that makes our GIR community so great, because we can all love different parts of the same amazing show, and even find common ground on episodes that aren’t our personal favorites.

Once you’ve finished listening you can join our discussion about all things MST3K over on our facebook page, or follow us on Twitter.

We also have a patreon page where you can support the show for just $1 a month and get access to our other podcast “Dr. Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster” – a monthly show where Dr. Odd forces us to watch one of his favorite films and then we all get together and discuss it. We appreciate your support in helping keeps the lights on up here in space!

Thanks for listening!

Episode 61 – The Beast of Hollow Mountain

Posted by on Dec 31, 2017 in Gizmonic Institutes Radio | 0 comments

The new year is almost upon us, and we celebrate by making some resolutions, as well as helping Dr. Odd with is love life (for what reason looking back on it now, I can’t fathom).

We also watched MST3K S11E5 – The Beast of Hollow Mountain, a film which we’re pretty certain started out as a standard western before some hollywood producer said “YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MOVIE NEEDS IS A DINOSAUR?” and then Beast of Hollow Mountain was born. As a film it’s at least passable,  and as an MST3K episode it’s pretty darn good (SPOILER ALERT: It has one of our favorite Season 11 skits so far).

Once you’ve finished listening, you can head over to our facebook page and talk about all sorts of MsT3K (and non MST3K) stuff with the coolest people on the internet (you, our fans). You can also follow us on twitter, and if you really like the show and want to hear more of us talking about bad movies, stop by and donate to our Patreon. Just $1 a month gets you access to Dr. Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster, where Dr. Odd makes us watch one of his favorite films every month and then discuss it with him.

Thanks for listening, and we hope you have a great start to 2018!

Episode 60 – Attack of the Giant Leeches!

Posted by on Oct 17, 2017 in Gizmonic Institutes Radio | 0 comments

This week, Dr. Odd gets a visitor. I think I’ll leave it at that and just let you experience it on your own, because it’s very wonderful.

We also discuss MST3K S4E6 – Attack of the Giant Leeches, a movie with visuals reminiscent of the old Lucas Arts game “Day of the Tentacle” and the aesthetic of the parts of the old Lucas Arts game “Day of the Tentacle” where you couldn’t figure out what to do next and it was 4 am and your best friend’s basement smelled like farts. It’s an interesting film in that it manages to exist without a single likeable character, but was also a monster movie where the “monsters” were so devoid of personality, you couldn’t root for them either. Luckily it was preceded by a rather delightful short, and Joel and the  Bots’ riffing of the film was spot on.

After listening, head over to discuss all things MST3K on our facebook page, or follow us on twitter! If you want to support the show and earn our undying love, you can also stop by our patreon page and for $1 a month you get access to our other podcast – “Dr. Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster”, a show featuring our normal shenanigans with Dr. Odd, but where we also talk about a terrible movie he made us watch. If you love the show but can’t donate to the patreon, then leaving a review on our iTunes page is also a great way to help support us!

Thanks for listening!

Episode 59 – Avalanche!

Posted by on Sep 16, 2017 in Gizmonic Institutes Radio | 0 comments

Things get heated up in space when we try and find out who is going to be the next Mayor of Space. Campaign contributions are made, and Treebus stops by. We also discuss MST3K S11E4 – Avalanche, a disaster film about, you guessed it, and Avalanche. Sorry, did I say “disaster film”? I meant “disaster OF A film”. The first half is pretty boring, and the second half (featuring the aforementioned avalanche) is also kind of boring, but is at least made watch-able by how stupid it is. It DOES make for a pretty great MST3K episode though, so you won’t hear us complain that much.

Make sure to stop by and say hi on our facebook page, and follow us on twitter. If you’re feeling particularly awesome, head over to our iTunes page as well and give our show a review! And if you REALLY like us (which we hope you do), stop by our Patreon page and donate! It’s only a dollar a month, and donating gets you access to our other show – Dr. Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster. Plus it makes us feel really great!

Thanks for listening!

Episode 58 – Being From Another Planet

Posted by on Sep 1, 2017 in Gizmonic Institutes Radio | 0 comments

Summer is almost over which means it’s time to cram as much fun in the sun as you can before fall arrives! Dr. Odd actually took us on a “family” vacation, that unfortunately featured about a 1% to 99% ratio of fun to sun. At least it was nice to get down from space for once… maybe…

This week we discuss MST3K S4E5 – Being From Another Planet, a mummy movie so bad that it almost breaks Joel and the Bots, as well as the viewers at home. Both Being From Another Planet and Castle of Fu Manchu are proof that a film can be so bad, that even great riffing can’t make it entertaining. Buried among the wreckage of this film though, is one of the best invention exchange ideas ever with the Mads’ “Tragic Moment Figurines”, which is a tragedy in and of itself because a sketch that good should have been saved for a much better episode.

Once you’re done listening, head over to our facebook page and discuss MST3K and MST3K related things with other like minded people (seriously, our community is the most awesome one anywhere online) and follow us on Twitter. If you love the show and want to support the podcast even more, we have a Patreon page where for just a dollar a month, you can access our other podcast Dr. Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster, where Dr. Odd makes us watch and discuss a film of his choice (spoiler alert: Dr. Odd has terrible taste in everything). Finally if you love us and want to help other people who like MST3K to find the show, head over to our iTunes page and leave a review.

Thanks for listening!

Episode 57 – The Time Travelers

Posted by on Jul 26, 2017 in Gizmonic Institutes Radio | 0 comments

If you had to guess what Dr. Odd had in his “recently viewed” section of Netflix, what do you think you’d see there? For better or for worse, we find out, and we get a cribs-style tour of his “house”. It’s both enlightening, and exactly what you’d expect.

We also discuss MST3K S11E3 – The Time Travelers, a film about a man named Danny who needs to learn about the Butterfly Effect and who by law shouldn’t ever be allowed within 1000 feet of a scientific facility. All joking aside The Time Travelers wasn’t actually THAT bad of a film, and Jonah and the bots are in fine form with the riffing. Now, it’s no Cry Wilderness, but it is still a very high quality MST3K episode.

Don’t forget to stop by our facebook page to join other awesome like-minded people who love both us and MST3K, and if following twitter accounts that only tweet once every couple weeks is your thing, you can find us there too. We also have a patreon page where for just a dollar a month you can get access to our other show – Dr. Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster – a show in which Dr. Odd makes us watch one of his favorite films, and then talk about it with him. It’s a very fun show, and your monthly donation REALLY helps us out! Last but not least, if you haven’t, stop by our itunes page and leave us a nice review! That one doesn’t cost anything and it’s also a lovely way to support the show!

Thanks for listening!

Episode 56 – Teenagers From Outer Space

Someone a long time ago once said “the Pen is mightier than the Sword”. Well up here in space we have neither pens nor swords, but Renea STILL managed to write a fairly lengthy space station newsletter. Maybe “newsletter” should be put in quotes? Aside from a rather interesting website write up, the other 900+ pages are somewhat questionable…

This week we discussed MST3K S4E4 – Teenagers From Outer Space. Not only is this a very good MST3K episode, but the film itself isn’t half bad either! All-in-all both Jeff and Renea enjoyed this episode quite a bit – particularly, but not limited to, anything directly related to really fake-y skeletons.

If you want to talk about how YOU feel about the skeletons in Teenagers From Outer Space (or anything else tangentially related to MST3K) you should go over to our facebook page and join a community of other awesome, like-minded people. If Facebook isn’t your thing, you can follow us on Twitter as well. We also have a patreon page, where for $1 a month you can get access to our other show “Dr. Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster” – a show where Dr. Odd forces us to watch one of his “favorite” films, and then the three of us discuss it. This month is the famous Turkish Star Wars, which is a film that almost completely eludes any sort of description. Your support helps us a great deal, and we love and appreciate all of you. And if you can’t support us monetarily, you can go to our iTunes page and leave us a nice review there – it helps us climb the iTunes charts and allows other people to find the show.

Thanks for listening! We love you all!

Episode 55 – Cry Wilderness

Do you ever metaphorically feel like things are out of control, and someone else is at the wheel? We literally feel that way this episode when we meet the unfortunate creature that Dr. Odd has tasked with piloting our ship (as well as a few other unsavory jobs).

This episode we discuss MST3K S11E2 – Cry Wilderness, a movie featuring a littering Bigfoot, and a lot of bowl cuts. Fortunately (despite the high ratio of bad hair) this turned out to be a fantastic MST3K episode – not just for the new season, but one of the best in the series.

If you want to talk MST3K with like-minded people, head over to our facebook page and meet our other awesome fans. If twitter is more your thing, you can follow us there too! We also have a patreon page, so if you love the show and can give $1 a month to help us out, we would really appreciate it! Finally, if you want to help other people find our show, go by our iTunes page and leave a review! We appreciate all of you!

Thanks for listening!

Episode 54 – City Limits

I don’t know a lot about science, let alone mad science, but I’m pretty sure doing an “exchange program” with your test subjects isn’t par for the course. But in the domain of Dr. Odd “par for the course” is usually about as far from normal as you can get, so I suppose that this shouldn’t have been unexpected. Dr. Odd and Dr. Rodd have decided to do a test-subject switcheroo, meaning that Seth was sent away to be subject to whatever horrors Dr. Rodd has in store, and Dr. Rodd’s captive Renea was sent over to the land of MST3K and clam juice.

After a brief acclimation period, we watch MST3K S4E3 – City Limits a film which seems to have inspired most, if not all of the outfits in the Fallout video game series. It’s a pretty bad movie, but a overall pretty decent MST3K episode.

Once you’re done listening, head over to our facebook page and talk with us more about MST3K, follow us on twitter, and leave us a review on iTunes. If you want more of Jeff, Renea and Dr. Odd, go to our Patreon page and subscribe to get this month’s episode of Doctor Odd’s Cinematic Fun Dumpster. This month we watched Roller Derby, which is essentially Napoleon Dynamite on rollerskates, minus the intentional irony, and with less charm, and significantly less plot.

Thanks for listening!
